Wasgamuwa

An uncrowded park between two great rivers.

What makes Wasgamuwa.

Wasgamuwa is a quiet, little-visited national park set between the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, known for its large resident elephant herds and a genuine wilderness feel free of safari crowds. It is one of the best places in the country to watch elephants without the jeep convoys of the headline parks. The park protects dry-zone forest, riverine habitat and ancient irrigation ruins, and is a stronghold for endemic birds, leopards and the elusive sloth bear. Community-based conservation work here, including long-running elephant research, is among the most respected on the island.
