A rugged biosphere of cloud forest and hidden villages.
The Knuckles Range — named for the knuckle-like silhouette of its peaks seen from Kandy — is a UNESCO-listed conservation area of montane forest, tumbling waterfalls and remote farming villages that see far fewer visitors than the main hill-country trail. Its dense biodiversity, mist forests and dramatic ridgelines make it the island's premier multi-day trekking destination. Guided walks thread through cardamom plantations, pine forest and cloud-wrapped grassland to villages such as Meemure, where traditional rice terracing still shapes the slopes. It is wilder and wetter than the tea heartland, and best explored slowly on foot with a local guide.
