Dowa Rock Temple
A roadside cave temple with an unfinished standing Buddha carved into the cliff face.

A mild-weather market town in the tea hills.
Bandarawela sits a little lower and drier than its neighbours, giving it one of the most equable climates on the island — long prized by the British as a restful sanatorium retreat. It is more a working market town than a tourist set-piece, which is part of its appeal: a real hill-country hub between Ella, Haputale and Nuwara Eliya. The surrounding estates, the Dowa rock temple and easy rail and road access to the wider highlands make it a comfortable, uncrowded base. A heritage hotel that has welcomed travellers since the colonial era and a busy daily produce market give the town a lived-in, unhurried character.
