What the Minneriya Elephant Gathering is really like.

As the dry season bites, hundreds of elephants migrate to the receding Minneriya tank for fresh grass and water — the single largest gathering of wild Asian elephants anywhere. Between July and October you can see two hundred to four hundred animals on the grasslands at once, including breeding herds and tiny calves. An afternoon jeep safari puts you on the lake bed as the light softens and the herds graze. It is one of nature's great predictable spectacles.

How the day unfolds.

Step 01
Afternoon departure
Set out from Habarana in the early afternoon so you reach the grasslands as the heat eases and the herds emerge.
Step 02
Out onto the tank bed
The jeep crosses onto the exposed bed of the great Minneriya tank, where fresh grass draws elephants for miles around.
Step 03
The herds converge
Family groups stream in from the forest until two hundred or more elephants are grazing and bathing together.

Calves and matriarchs
Watch tiny calves shadow their mothers as matriarchs lead the breeding herds across the open plain.
