Sinharaja Forest Bathing

Slow shinrin-yoku in primary rainforest, where birdsong and green light do the resting for you.

What the Sinharaja Forest Bathing is really like.

Sinharaja is Sri Lanka's last great lowland rainforest, and a forest-bathing session here is about presence rather than distance covered. Borrowing the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, a guide leads you at a deliberately slow pace, pausing to breathe, listen and simply be among the oldest trees on the island. There are no species to tick off and nowhere to rush; the layered birdsong, a clear stream and shafts of canopy light do the work. It suits anyone who wants the forest to calm them rather than test them.
