The Escape Routes
A golden beach backed by palms on the south coast of Sri Lanka

Two coasts, a beach for every month.

6 experiences

Sri Lanka's two monsoons mean a calm, swimmable coast almost year round: the south and west from roughly November to April, the east from May to September. Golden bays at Mirissa and Tangalle, snorkelling reefs at Pasikuda, beginner surf at Weligama and the wild lagoons of Kalpitiya are all an easy drive apart.

What you can do

  • South & west coast, Nov–Apr
  • East coast, May–Sep
  • Snorkel reefs at Pasikuda & Trincomalee
  • Beginner surf at Weligama

A coast for the season

When the southwest monsoon stirs up the south and west coasts, the east coast, from Trincomalee and Nilaveli to Pasikuda and Arugam Bay, is at its calmest, and vice versa. We send you to whichever coast is in season.

Swim, snorkel and surf

The shallow reefs off Pasikuda and Nilaveli are made for first snorkels, Weligama's sandy bay is one of the gentlest places to learn to surf, and Hikkaduwa's coral sanctuary keeps the fish close to shore.

Beyond the sand

Most beach days pair easily with a Mirissa whale boat, a stilt fisherman dawn, a walk along the Galle ramparts at sunset, or a lagoon kite and dolphin trip from Kalpitiya.
