Kelani River rapids
The white-water run through a rainforest gorge — the island's best rafting.

White-water rafting in a rainforest gorge.
Kitulgala sits in the wet western foothills where the Kelani River carves through rainforest, making it the country's adventure-sports capital. The grade two and three rapids draw rafters year-round, alongside canyoning, jungle treks and abseiling down forest waterfalls. The surrounding lowland rainforest at Makandawa is one of the island's best birding sites, rich in endemic species. The area also carries a cinematic footnote — the river crossing in the Oscar-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed here — and makes an easy, scenic stop between Colombo and the high hills.
