How much climbing and walking do the sites involve?

Some sites are a real climb: Sigiriya is around 1,200 steps and Pidurangala is a rocky scramble, while Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the Dambulla caves are much gentler. We start early to beat the heat and crowds, and can swap in an easier viewpoint for anyone who would rather not climb.

Is there a dress code for temples?

Yes. Active temples ask for covered shoulders and knees, shoes and hats removed, and no posing with your back to a Buddha image. We flag it before each visit, and a light scarf or sarong covers you in a moment.
