What the Yala Dawn Safari is really like.

Yala holds one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and the cool hour before sunrise is when they are most likely to be on the move. You enter Block 1 at first light with a naturalist guide, tracking alarm calls and pugmarks while elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles wake around you. Mornings are quieter and cooler than the afternoon run, and the dawn light over the lagoons is reason enough to go. We use the better blocks and keep a respectful distance from any sighting.

How the day unfolds.

Step 01
Pre-dawn departure
A coffee in the dark and a short drive to the gate, joining the line of jeeps before the park opens at first light.
Step 02
First light at the gate
The barrier lifts at dawn and you roll into Block 1 as the scrub turns from blue to gold and the forest starts to stir.
Step 03
Tracking the leopard
Your guide reads alarm calls, fresh pugmarks and the body language of deer to work the tracks toward a possible sighting.
Step 04
Elephants at the waterhole
Between leopard tracks, herds and lone bulls come down to drink and bathe at the shrinking dry-season waterholes.
Step 05
Birds of the lagoons
Yala's brackish lagoons brim with painted storks, pelicans, eagles and bee-eaters among more than two hundred species.
Step 06
Breakfast in the bush
Pause at a permitted clearing for a packed breakfast as the heat builds and the park slowly empties out.
